International Students

International Students I
By Jessica, Xiao Hua, Manuel, and Florencio

Why is Santa Barbara City College the best option for international students? Sometimes it is difficult to make the right decision on choosing the school when you want to study in another country because there is a lot of information about the schools and their programs in the whole world. The first step students take is searching information in study centers or agencies and find the complete details about the culture, weather and educational systems of different schools. Also, students can see video tours and photos, and read comments about the schools so that they can know more about the environment around the campuses and cities. Many students choose SBCC because the fees here are lower than other internationals schools, and SBCC offers high quality in all of their study programs. The weather in Santa Barbara is very nice—not too hot, not too cold, and the campus is located by the ocean. Also the city has cultural diversity and people here are very friendly. In addition, traditionally, international students have excelled academically while at SBCC, which is well known for the high quality of teaching of its faculty and its outstanding support services. Besides, each year, international students earn "President's Honor Status" for supporting academic performance; in fact, after two years, every student can apply to transfer to an university to get a higher degree, consequently a better job and better future. In conclusion, there many points why international students choose to study at SBCC. First, the enviroment of the city and college fits international students to study. Second, the study system offers high quality. Third, the view and location of SBCC is very nice. Fourth, school keeps on supporting international students as much as it can. Last, international students have opportunities to transfer to a university to build up their beautiful life.

International Students II

Living abroad is not easy for international students. We always think America is a paradise and when we study in America, we will have a good future, a good job and good education, but it is not easy. At Santa Barbara City College, there are a lot of international students. When international students are interviewed, they always say that they have problems here. Some of the problems are finding scholarships, culture shock and freedom. Scholarships are very important for international students that come to America. International scholarship is a program what helps students from different countries. Scholarships are an opportunity for the students to find money for their education goals. A scholarship helps the students to pay books, rent, food, etc. There are many scholarships such as merit scholarships, need based scholarships, athletic scholarship, school based individual scholarships and full/partial scholarships. Each student chooses the ideal scholarships for his or her education goals. SBCC scholarships help students with their college education at SBCC. Scholarships are a gift for the students who study very hard and make efforts to better themselves for the best future. SBCC scholarships are an excellent opportunity for international students to follow their dreams. Culture Shock is an emotional reaction that all international students meet when they arrive. First, language is a big problem because they don’t understand American people. Also, lifestyle in the U.S. is more liberal--the young American people, during spring breaks travel to different places, beaches, and mountains; in some countries, it is different. The entire family might go together on vacation. Second, the foods’ ingredients are different. In other countries, some foods are hot; in the U.S. people don’t make hot food all the time. In the U.S., it is more common to see fast food; in other countries it is more common to eat foods made at home. International students need lots of efforts and are independent. Living in a different country, they have to strive to study more. They need more time than native students. For example, if students study the same subject, like biology, besides studying for that subject, international students also have to study for English because that is not their first language. They have to work harder than native students. In addition, international students are independent. Moving to another country, they have to overcome a lot of difficult things. It’s completely different when they live in under the protection of their family. An international student talked about her life in Vietnam and at SBCC. Every thing she has to do by herself, like cooking, waking up with nobody waking her up, and going to work to make money. These are the things that she never did before. She did not know how to cook, and her mom took care everything for her—even waking her up to go to school every morning. Now she lives here alone, and nobody can help her anymore. It is only her and she needs to do everything. Right now, she can do many things by herself and find a job to make money to pay for the conditions of life at SBCC so she can also assist her family. She said she is completely different from the girl she was before who couldn’t do anything and relied on parents. She learns a lot and becomes more independent in her life everyday. Innternational students grow up a lot when they live and study in another country without their.parents and family. As a result, international students have three main different problems to deal with. First, culture schock, customs are different between the two countries--USA and their home country. Second, tuitions are expensive but there are different institutions that give fanancial aid to international students. And third, international students feel better in this country because they feel that they have more opportunities in the USA. Therefore, as a recommendation, it is good to research on the differences between both countries as well as the different kinds of financial help they can get.

Classes

Efficiently taking classes at SBCC
By Silvia Jimenez and Szu-Pei Lu

Taking classes at SBCC is a nice opportunity for people in the community. At Santa Barbara City
College, there are varieties of classes that you as a student can take. If you are interested in learning another language, there are classes from English to French. They also offer classes in which you learn about a job career and what it takes to be in that position. There are also sport classes for those who enjoy exercising. If you have a busy schedule, you can choose an online course or a course that you take on the SBCC campus. There are many classes available to you at SBCC. It’s a pretty sure fact that you will find a class of your interest.

At SBCC, there are many classes for students who need to complete their Education. First, SBCC
offers many ESL classes for students who have English as a second language. Since those students don’t know how to use English very well, SBCC has ESL Grammar, Reading, and Writing classes to help them complete the English lesson they need. They also offer some other language classes for students who are interested in learning different languages besides English. Second, there are a lot of nice sport classes and installation like the yoga class and gym. Students can get healthy life by taking sport classes at SBCC. The other good thing is that SBCC also offers online classes so that students can learn by taking classes at home. The last thing and the most important thing is that SBCC can help you whenever with your need for a job in various ways, like helping you write a resume, or figuring out the type of job that is good for you; or you can even work for SBCC. This is really convenient for students who don’t have time and have busy work schedules.

Restrooms

Restrooms in the Humanities Building
By Lupita Trujillo and Gloria Orozco

Many students are complaining about restroom services in the Humanities Building at S.B.C.C, because sometimes they are not at good conditions. The restrooms are few and there are many students. Restroom services are really important because all students use these facilities.
The restrooms are not enough for the number of students at S.B.C.C. Also, the toilet always needs paper. In the Humanities Building there is only one restroom and this has just two toilets to a lot of students. Also, the restroom is dirty occasionally, but it is because there are few workers and the students don’t take care of the restroom when they use it. Although the workers clean the restroom, it gets dirty fast because the restroom is small and has little space. In conclusion, many students think that it is indispensable that this building has more restrooms.

Did you know?

The things that you use in the restrooms are recyclable. The paper towels are made from 100% post consumer recycled paper; the toilet paper is currently 75% since January 2006. The blue plastic bags in the recycle bins are made from 100% recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable. The restroom hand soap containers are now 100% recyclable. The floors on campus are cleaned with non-toxic “Hillyard Green Select Products” which do not contain any bleach, ammonia, and/or any harsh chemicals or oils.

Library

Library

Every school has a most important place which, in SBCC’s case, is the library. Why is the library very important at Santa Barbara City College? The library is the best place to go and borrow books. Also, another two good things that you can do in the library are studying and using treir computers. The library is very helpful for student to study.
We can use the library in many ways. First, we can borrow books in the library. To borrow books from SBCC library is very easy: you just show your ID and register. At SBCC’s library they will give you a long time to read the books you borrow. If you cannot finish reading all of them and you want to keep reading your books, you can also renew your loan in the borrow record. It’s convenient for everybody. Another way is that you can go to the library website, and find out some of your favorite books. You just enter your book name. But, the best way is to go to the library and borrow it by youself. You will get lots of fun. Second, there are a lot of students studying in the library. Students always come here after class to, do their homework, write essays, and read books. The library is the best place to study because the library is very quiet. So, the library is adapted for student to study. Also, students can use the computers in the library. If students study in the library and have some questions, they can use computers to find out the answer on the internet. There is wireless Internet access on campus, so students can take their laptop to do research or study. Finally, the most important way to use library is to study in the library. Many students, after class, always go to the library to study. We can do homework, read books, and do group work because the library is very quiet. It is the best place to study. If you write essays and have some problems, there are writing tutors. You can ask them questions, and they can help you very well. So the library is a very good study place.
Those are the best ways to take advantage of the library at SBCC : borrowing books , studying with a quiet environment, and also using computers . For students like us, the library is the place which helps us to be successful in the school. Anyway, there are many ways which tell us that the library is helping students succeed in the school.

Bookstore

The BookStore
By Yuka, Haruko, Mari, and Saam

At SBCC we have a great book store which a lot of students visit many times in a day. It is located on the East Campus immediately adjacent to the Earth and Biological Science Building and the Campus Center. They provide many kinds of things in the bookstore. For instance, they sell books, clothing, food and so forth. There are enough books in the bookstore for more than 17,000 students, which is unbelievable --it is hard to provide these many books for every student.
In addition, the bookstore has increased the amount of hours it stays open. In the past there were huge lines on the first 2 weeks of the semester, and the bookstore’s open hours were not long enough; it was from 9 am until 4:30 pm, but now they extend the time until 7 pm which is much longer than before. Besides, another good point about the bookstore is that you can return your books if you drop your class, or after the semester you are able to sell them.
On the other hand, there are some problems related to the bookstore service, which is important for students. Does the staff have some good information? Many students have some questions and want to ask them. Then of course the staff can answer the questions. If they don’t know the information, they have to search it. Also, they need good behavior. A students said, "When I went to the bookstore, I couldn’t find the things I wanted. And I asked a member of the staff, but she just said “I don’t know”, and her attitude was so bad. I felt uncomfortable and I felt I didn’t want to ask them any questions any more." In addition, many students use the bookstore, especially during the first semester. If they don't have many registers they can’t take care of students. And also, it's important that they have a good selection. They have textbooks, pens, notes, novels, CD, foods, clothes and so forth. However, students don't think they have enough novels and food items. If they have more variety of books and food items, they will be better.
In conclusion, the bookstore has some problems like long lines, bad attitude, and not good selection of books. However, there are not only bad points, but also there are good points. For example, we can return books if we drop a class. If they change their problems, they will be better.
